FADING INTO PLASTIC

Collage from found objects

My partner brought me this tiny plastic bottle from the plane, on his way back from the Seychelles — one of the most beautiful beach destinations in the world. It is very small, and of course, he saved it for me. People often gift me the most random things, knowing I’ll probably use them in a collage someday…

This piece grew from that bottle — and from something heavier I’ve felt while diving: seeing plastic drifting underwater where fish and corals should be. It’s heartbreaking. It makes me wonder — what if one day we’re all just… surrounded by plastic? Well, maybe we are already? What if we become plastic? If we keep growing, consuming, and building, maybe we’ll even move underwater. Maybe we’ll all be part-mermaid, part-microplastic, swimming through underwater cities made of TRASH.

It’s a thought that scares me. It’s a future I don’t want — but sometimes find myself daydreaming (or maybe nightmaring) about. How far will we go?
